CHATEAU DE CHARRAS was built in the 18th Century. In the late 1990s a restoration programme began to restore the building. The Château offers a relaxing family friendly environment where children can play, explore and adventure. Facilities included are: 13 acres of walled gardens including an organic orchard, an outdoor (gated) heated swimming pool (15m x 6m), 2 tennis courts and table-tennis.

The adjoining village of Charras has

  • Boulangerie (selling freshly baked breads and confections)
  • General store (well stocked and welcoming)
  • Hairdressers, post office
  • Le Tournesol a bar/restaurant
  • 13th Century Church adjoining the Château for those who love architecture and want to step back in time.

The outskirts of the village are bordered by a forest and agricultural land that is perfect for walking, cycling and picnics.

Our house, Le Chai, is set within 13 acres of private grounds. It was originally the winery of the Chateau and has been sympathetically and tastefully restored to retain features such as exposed stonework while at the same time offering all modern conveniences. For more information CLICK HERE.

The property is a generous size with excellent facilities (as outlined below) and is within close proximity to many of the Region’s finest attractions and activities.

This property is a very well-appointed house and had everything for a great family holiday. Sometimes it’s hard to get the right mix in a holiday that suits all ages but this holiday suits both teenagers and younger children. Perfect for families with young children, as it is very well equipped – plenty of toys, books, towels, tennis racquets, armbands etc. for the pool.

The house is a good size, and has a wonderful terrasse with fantastic views of the Charente countryside and the Chateau grounds with chairs and table for sunbathing and dining outside. But the thing that makes this holiday house stand out are the grounds of Chateau de Charras: extensive lawns for the kids to run around on, a very pleasant gated and heated outdoor pool, a historic church and of course the chateau itself.

There is so much to do around the area and in the very beautiful grounds of the chateau there is the heated pool, tennis courts, badminton and table tennis. There are leafy walks through the orchard and in season you can pick fruit such as plums cherries, apples and pears from the trees.

There is the old peaceful church on the grounds of Chateau de Charras with beautiful pieces of artwork. In the village, there is the boulangerie – be there early for your croissant amande or your pain au chocolat! There is a well-stocked convenience store/post office, a hairdresser and a recently opened pub/restaurant.

We have an extensive list in the house of very good local restaurants. Our favourite is the local ‘Le Petit Restaurant’ in Rozet.

Outside of Charras there is so much to do. The canoeing in Montbron is so much fun and a lovely way to see the area – bring a change of clothes! There is cycling from Marthon. There is a comic strip museum in Angouleme – also great shopping in Angouleme for those teenage girls of all ages.

Further afield there is the beautiful Rochefoucauld Chateau, Villebois Lavalette, Cognac, Saintes and the underground church in Aubterre sur Dronne. Aubterre also has lovely craft shops and a delicious ice-cream shop. The more you explore in this area – the more you will find to do.

You can also manage to squeeze in a trip to Paris on the speedy TGV from Angouleme. Futuroscope and Disneyland Paris are also near enough touring options by train. All in all there is something in this holiday for everyone and staying in this house means you can travel near and far easily and always return to a very comfortable relaxing base.
