The commune of Montbron, France is in New-Aquitaine, in the department of Charente. Populated by a little more than 2,200 inhabitants, it is located not far from Charras and only three kilometers from the Dordogne. It is also part of the nature reserve of the Valley of the Renaudie.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Montbron really came to life only in the Gallo-Roman era with the foundation of an oppidum. Oppidum is a Latin word meaning the main settlement in any administrative area of ancient Rome. Montbron was a barony of great importance in the Middle Ages, the commune was known at the time to be on a secondary route of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and then welcomed many pilgrims.
Today, the city of Montbron has become famous in luxury leather goods with the installation of a Hermès workshop, and still offers an architectural heritage of great importance to appreciate the rich history of this Charentaise commune.

The regional nature reserve of “La Vallee de la Renaudie” shows an ample mosaic of original habitats which are propitious to the development of a great faunistic and floristic diversity. The CREN, actual site manager is proposing for people to discover all its richness through one of the main three discovery trails: Biodiversity (4km), Geology (3.5km) and Water (3km). Built in freestone or coated rubble, the church stands out for its bell tower which rises elegantly above the roofs of canal tiles. It is made up of two levels of arches, the first blind, the second with twin bays, the arches falling on fine columns with capitals. The western facade, very bare, has a beautiful arched profile portal whose three rows of arches fall on fine small columns.
Inside, the nave is covered with a simple barrel ceiling of an old structure. The bay under the bell tower, for its part, has a dome on pendentives and the apse with a cul-de-four vault. The choir is pierced with three small openings framed by small columns. The work brought to light murals, in the process of being identified, in which the face of Saint Paul emerges.

Château de Montbron
The current Château de Montbron (or Vieux Château) was built during the 15th century. Built under the authority of Marguerite de Rohan, Countess of Angoulême, the castle consists of a main building on which leans a polygonal tower through which we access a remarkable spiral staircase.
There are with two magnificent painted fireplaces dating from the 17th century adorning the two exhibition rooms on the first floor. The whole, built with the stones of the old feudal fortress, was integrated into the city surrounded by ramparts.
